DAY 24 - HAVE A COLOURFUL CHRISTMAS, LOVE DG xx

ONE SLEEP UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!! As this our last Advent Calendar entry we thought we'd get you to look at what lies ahead for your colour in 2012. If you're thinking of taking the leap into a new world of hair colour, Liz Edmonds, Colour Director & Floor Director at DG has given her top tips on what to consider when dying your hair....

1. Choose a shade of colour within two or three shades of its original hue. Remember that the hair you were born with complements your natural colouring so it’s a good idea to stick within the same colour spectrum, to enhance your hair but not to go against your natural look.

2. Don’t apply lemon juice or acid sprays such as Sun-In because you believe that it will produce natural highlights. Not only can you not control the colour (so that brassy or orange hints are very likely) but you will also dry out your hair.

3. If home-colouring, do not take the colour to the ends of the hair. They are more porous which means they accept the colour more readily, which will make them much darker than the rest of the hair.

4. Always ensure that your hairline is lighter than the rest of your hair or it will appear that you have a dark ring around your face. This will also highlight wrinkles and make your complexion appear more sallow.

5. Remember that using any type of colour is likely to affect the condition of your hair. At Daniel Galvin we are keen to focus on the ‘Three Cs’: Colour, Cut and Condition. Our new ‘3rd C’ Initiative is the perfect afterthought to your colouring treatment; offering a prescriptive conditioning service for your specific hair type. Alternatively, if you’re home-colouring make sure your hair gets the same treatment: invest in a good conditioning masque such as the Kérastase Masque Chroma Reflect or the Louise Galvin Hair Treatment Masque and apply once a week.

6. If you are unsure about changing your colour, start off with a semi-permanent colour which will give you a hint of what you might look without you having to make that irreversible final leap.

7. Don’t use henna on grey or white hair as it will turn it orange.

8. Always have a skin test prior to colouring your hair especially if you are susceptible to sensitivities.

9. If you are sitting in the sun, always ensure that you wear a hat or apply a hair masque to counteract orange hues and brassiness. Also always thoroughly rinse out the chlorine or salt water which heavily dries out the hair, strips the colour and can make it turn green!

10. If you’re disguising greys, semi-permanent colours are a great idea as they blend in the greys as well as giving your colour more depth. The Daniel Galvin Vegetable Colours do exactly this as well as leaving your hair with a glossy, healthy finish.

DAY 22 - TWO-TONE TRESSES

Two-tone hair is all the rage at the moment... it started with Dip Dying & has graduated to a much more natural, flowing appearance as pioneered by Daniel in his Finger Painting technique.

Daniel developed Finger Painting because he looked at the Dip Dying technique and felt that he could do better. In his opinion, dip dying:

1. Can simply appear that you have major re-growth
2. Looks very unnatural as colourists often go for the wrong shade of colour
3. Often shows the foil marks so that you have a very distinct line around your head

As featured in the Sunday Times Style, Daniel launched Finger Painting as a free-flowing, effortless look produced by gradually coaxing and teasing the colour through the middle to the tips of the hair with the fingers rather than applying the colour using combs and brushes and baking it in foils.

Using a specially prepared formula Daniel lifts the colour that already lies within the natural pigment of the hair, producing a hue that is a few shades lighter than the original and thus delivering a soft, uncontrived effect. Similarly, the finger weaving produces a gentle, more unaffected appearance, avoiding harsh, angular foil lines.

DAY 21 - FRINGE BENEFITS...

Fringes are such a stylish enhancement to any hairstyle – whether wispy, choppy, thick or side-swept, they can transform an everyday ‘do into a style statement; freshening up your look and adding that extra pizzazz. Celebrities are always searching for that little bit that will set them apart from the crowd and the fringe is the ultimate accessory. A thick, eye-lid length, blunt fringe can truly set off a red-carpet up-do; whilst a side-swept fringe complements beachy hair and maxi dresses in any papped holiday shots!

Frankie & Angela, a couple of our fabulous stylists give us a few of their hot fringe tips & reckon that Nicole Richie has got it covered...:

Frankie: There are so many different types of fringe and each offers something different to your look. When you’re asking for a fringe, talk to your stylist about which style will suit your face. If you have a square jaw, avoid fringes that go straight across: you need a slightly rounded cut with longer parts at the sides to properly frame the face. If you have a small forehead, you should start your fringe higher up the head which will lengthen your face and give the illusion of it extending into the hairline.

My favourite of the fringes is the side-swept fringe which are very versatile: You can wear your hair down with beach waves to give you a boho, casual look or you can straighten your hair and carefully position the side-swept fringe to give you a much smarter, more manicured look.

Angela: Thick, blunt fringes are my favourite as they make such a dramatic statement; framing the face and bringing out your eyes.

The only trouble with them is they do require some maintenance. The thick fringe is a very specific look & if it gets too long you’ll end up bumping into things! I would recommend a fringe trim every three weeks as with such a stylish statement, it would be a shame to miss the mark.

DAY 17 - A RIGHT ROYAL (HAIR)DO

2011 will almost certainly be remembered as the year of the Royal Wedding. And when you think about the newest member of the Royal Family (well, bar Mike Tindall) one can't help but think of her gorgeous flowing mane (Mike's hair isn't as nice...)

But it's not just Princess Catherine's hairstyle that creates her perfectly preened look. Gerald, one of our Senior Stylists, says that the condition of your hair is just as important as its cut.

The key to its condition, he says, is to "respect your hair... When you shampoo it don’t roughly apply it. Use one finger to apply and then pull it through the hair from the top to the tips. Vigorous application might make the shampoo lather more but it doesn’t make it any more effective. Shower downwards (avoid showers that come at you from every angle) as it keeps the cuticle closed which locks in the moisture. Do the same with the conditioner application & when you comb it through make sure you start from the bottom and gradually move up your hair so that you are working through a piece at a time. Use a Tangle Teezer if you’re struggling, but remember that if you’re tugging at a knot, you’re ripping the hair. When you’re drying your hair dab it with a towel – roughly rubbing it will open the cuticle and undo all the good your carful wash has just done.

"Argan oil based products such as Moroccan Oil are very good for your hair in the Winter, but I would advise using a cream or masque in the Summertime as oil will intensify the heat of the sun on your hair and might damage it. If you’re having a relaxed day at home keep the masque on for the whole day – the longer you keep it on, the more nutrients will be absorbed by the hair.

"What you eat makes EVERY difference to the condition of your hair. Raw vegetables, pulses, beans, red meat once a week, chicken once a week all maintain your hair’s naturally beautiful appearance. But it’s fish that has the greatest effect on the hair as it releases natural oils which keep the hair looking shiny."

DAY 16 - A LASTING BLOW-DRY

Picture the scene - you have had your hair blow-dried for your work Christmas party on Thursday night. It's now Friday morning, you have your friend's Christmas party this evening but you don't want to go to the hairdresser again today as you don't have the time or the money. How do you prolong Thursday's blow-dry?

Bobby, one of our Style Directors, gives his top tips for how to make your salon style last this Christmas...

"My basic tips would be to try & touch your hair as little as possible and shield it from the elements. Remember a hat and umbrella even when it looks like it might be dry and warm. Nothing can ruin a ‘salon look’ like a rain shower and a gust of wind.

"That night, before you go to sleep, pin your hair to the top of your hair with a large clasp clip. When you wake up in the morning hang your head upside down and blast your hair with cold air (if you use hot air it’ll pull out the shape). Then give it a bit of a spritz of hairspray to give it some body and hold.

"Dry shampoo is a god-send in terms of preservation – not only will it lift the grease out but it’ll also give your hair some substance. I’d recommend Batiste which is available at Boots. I’d also recommend L’Oreal Professionelle Crystal Gloss spray which gives your hair a light shine and extra gloss."

There you have it - salon beautiful hair for a second day in a row... Perfect for your relentless Christmas diary.

DAY 15 - THE BROOKLYN MESSY UP-DO

Brooklyn Decker may be fairly new to the celebrity scene but she's already making an impact on the fashion & beauty scenes. This gorgeous messy 'do is another brilliant Christmas hair-up for party time.

Molly, one of our younger stylists, shows us how it's done...

STEP ONE:

Curl the hair with a curling tong or with hair straighteners to give the hair the appearance of a natural wave.

STEP TWO:

Back-comb the top of the hair to give the 'do a bit of height and pin up the upper part of the hair.

STEP THREE:

Start pinning the hair up in a non-structured way taking care to show off the curled parts of the hair tips.

STEP FOUR:

Take the front part of the fringe and twist it to give the front a bit more character and shape. Pin it above the ear.

And you've got yourself a Brooklyn...

DAY 12 - TREND ALERT... SIDE PARTINGS

Daniel Galvin stylist Stevie Holland, gives us some top tips on how to create Side Partings, the trend of the moment...

Valentino AW11

Side partings are fantastic because, strangely enough, if you move from centre to side, or if you change sides you can actually really change your appearance.

Autumn Winter catwalks exhibited a variety of side partings. For example, Valentino went for the sleek side partings accompanied by a tight, unforgiving ponytail whilst the House of Holland went for a soft side parting with sweeping, tumbling waves.

For a standard side-parting you should aim your comb about halfway between the ear and the centre of your head. Draw the line along your head with the end of a comb and then part it. Apply a strong holding product to the part closest to the ear and sweep the rest of the hair over.

If you’re looking for a more romantic wavy look, dry the front section of your hair forward so that when you part it at the side it sweeps across the face.

If you’re looking for a dramatic look, aim your parting slightly closer to the ear and lift the larger section of hair with a round brush, applying a good amount of hairspray to create a quiff type of look.
If you have a side-parting and you want an updo keep it flat to the head with not much body. Think about having a low tight pony tail or a side chignon or bun. If you’re wearing your hair down with a side-parting, go for body and oomph!

Any hair can look fantastic with a side-parting – whether curly, straight, long, short… as long as your parting is properly defined. If you’re going for a sleek, chic look use the L’Oreal Professionelle Play Ball Body Jam. It’s a fantastic product which is gel but dries without a wet effect. If you’re going for tumbling waves with a dramatic far slung parting I would always recommend Elnette.

DAY 10 - Wrapped up like a Christmas Present - Step-by-Step to a Hair Bow

Off to a Christmas party tonight?? A fabulous look for such an occasion is the Hair Bow - without any added accessories you can create an easy fun 'do... Senior Stylist Brendon shows us the simplest way to create this look...

STEP ONE:

Scrape up your hair into a high pony tail and spray it with hairspray.

STEP TWO:

Take a medium sized piece of hair and wrap it around the hairband. Pin it. Then split the remaining hair in half.

STEP THREE:

Take two small rollers and roll the hair back from the tip to the hairband. Pin it in place and rearrange the hair to conceal the roller. Do the same with the second piece of hair.

STEP FOUR:

Et VOILA! A bow fit for a Christmas present.

DAY 9 - RETRO WAVES

Waves don't have to be a Summer look... Loose tumbling locks can be just as much a Christmas 'do and Style Director Frankie Pullen tells us just how simply they can be created...

Step one

Create a well defined parting.
Start at the front at the parting and take sections an inch thick and 2.5 inches long. Use Babyliss Pro Curling tongs to roll the hair towards the parting.

Step two:

Work down the head and then around, pinning the curls with kirby grips as you work your way round. When you have completed the head spray it with L'Oreal Pli and then L'Oreal Air Fix. Brush it out with a cushion brush to give soft, loose retro waves

Both Megan & Claudia look gorgeous with retro waves - Megan simply took small sections of the hair to create her 'do whilst Claudia's sections were larger.

DAY 8 - STEP-BY-STEP TO A CHRISTMAS PLAIT

Ever wanted to do a Leona and wear a gorgeous French Side Fishtail Plait? Style Director, Bobby Collier shows us how...

Step one:

Choose which side you want the plait to fall and start on the other side. Create a definite side parting and on the smaller side, divide the part between the parting and the ear into 3.

Step two:

Start off as a normal plait and then gradually introduce more pieces in. Work away from the face and in a diagonal direction so that your plait will sweep over your other shoulder. As we're aiming for the plait to be quite loose it's fine to take quite large pieces.

Step three:

When you have reached the bottom of your opposite ear start to turn the plait into a fishtail plait. Do this by putting the hair into a ponytail and dividing the ponytail in two. Then begin to pull small sections from the outside into the middle of the plait.

Step four:

Finally continue to the bottom of the plait and tie it. Ruffle it up by backcombing it with your hands. Spray it with L'Oreal Professional Crystal Gloss and seal it with hair spray. And there you have it - a perfect Leona Christmas Plait!

DAY 4 - THE SLICKED-BACK PONYTAIL

A very popular 'do at the Autumn / Winter 2011 catwalks this year was the 'slicked-back pony'. Fashion shows such as Valentino and Louis Vuitton proved that ponytails may be old-hat when it comes to style but created effectively they can be the perfect option for work Christmas do as an easy 'desk-to-bar' style.

Jay, one of our fabulous stylists, who has done extensive work at London Fashion Week shows us how to pull off a catwalk pony...

"This look is uber-sleek and super-polished. We start with wax on the roots to help to create clean sections and then divide the hair into a lower half and upper half."

"Then we take the lower section and scrape it right back to create a very tight ponytail. Do the same with the upper section, dragging the two together and creating a face-lift effect! STEP 1: Separate your hair into three parts: the front two inches of your hair (a), the hair from there to the back of your crown (b) and then tie the lower part in a low pony tail (c).

STEP 2: Backcomb part b (the crown) and pin it at the top of the ponytail

STEP 3: Bring the front part of the hair around to the back and wrap it around the pony tail. Set with a strong hair spray, such as L’Oréal Air Fix and finish with a texture spray, such as the Play Ball Beach Fizz, scrunching up your pony tail to create the desired messy effect. To add extra waves use the Babyliss Professional Curling Tongs.

Who Fancies a Crazily Coloured Christmas?!

'White Rabbits' to one & all! And as November brings chilly weather & the central London shops begin to take on the appearance of a Winter Wonderland; we at Daniel Galvin start to think of Christmas and all the fab parties we will be preparing you for!!!

Autumn / Winter trends start to fill the salon as we create all manner of fabulous chic 'dos for our ever-fashion-conscious clients. Having scoured the fashion mags for the most trendy hairstyles, we've noticed the reappearance of one fabulous trend: CRAZY COLOUR.

Judging by our favourite celebrities’ locks at the moment, people are being more adventurous with the colours they choose. One of our talented colourists, Charlotte recommends either ‘Colour in Flashes,’ small clip-in hair pieces which can embellish your ‘do, or just a beautifully styled wig. That way you can pick and choose how colourful you feel!

However, (not to appear petulant but...)this colourful approach is nothing new! Daniel Galvin created ‘Crazy Colour’ in 1967. He says: “I developed Crazy Colour in order to shock people into considering any sort of colour in their hair. In those days, people merely used to colour their hair to cover their grey; it wasn’t seen as a fashion statement. I started dying hair bright colours using nylon dye, however, in the late ‘60s Zandra Rhodes came into the salon & suggested silk dye, which she used to make her silk prints. From here we then experimented with a chemist, using dye and emulsifying wax powder. This created bright and long-lasting colour. "The harsh winter weather can be very damaging to our hair. It can easily become dry and brittle during and effective, preventative steps need to be taken to ensure that your hair does not get damaged.

"Every woman wants healthy, glossy, bouncy hair during this time of the year but few people spend much time thinking about how to get it & maintain it. For the most part, just a regular shampoo & condition isn’t enough to keep your hair looking shiny - you often need that little bit more…

1. A balanced lifestyle and diet is a good contributor to both healthy looking hair and skin.

2. I’m a great believer in hair oils and would recommend Moroccan Oil which we use in the salon. I would also recommend olive oil as a good natural home alternative.

3. Limit your use of hair irons or hair dryers. If you do need to use them, I would recommend a leave-in conditioner prior to use, to lock in the moisture.

4. Use hair masques! They are an excellent way of bringing a shine to the surface and to prevent frizzing when it’s cold and raining outside.

5. Avoid styling products which contain alcohol which dries out the hair."

Canadian band New Look visit DG at the Corinthia

New cutting edge Canadian musicians, New Look were the latest celebrities to visit the Daniel Galvin salon for styling before an exclusive performance at the Calvin Klein Collection dinner in London last week. Stylist Jay Goodwin worked on both Sarah and Adam’s hair before the duo performed at the intimate gig.

For Sarah, Jay created soft, tousled waves, “I prepped Sarah’s hair with styling cream and dried it into her hair, I then used tongs to create a soft, natural curl and blow dried her fringe to create volume through the top.”

For Adam, Jay trimmed his hair before “messing it up with some product to make it look less uniform.” The breakthrough new musicians visited the new Daniel Galvin salon at the Corinthia hotel.

The Story of The Little Princesses and Their Magically Growing Hair

Once upon a time there lived a beautiful long-haired beauty named Rapunzel who Disney granted the chance to be a Princess and take her rightful place on a throne in the Magical Kingdom.

Children came from far and wide to witness this happy occasion to the beautiful Palace of Kensington in the wonderful land of London. All 150 young princesses shared one wish: to have hair as long and as flowing as Princess Rapunzel herself. This wish was cheerily granted by 10 magical hairdressers, friends of the High Wizard Daniel Galvin, who whistled merrily as they performed these transformations.

And WHAT a jolly time was had by all! Thanks to Bobby, Ellie, Emma, Hayleigh, Manuel, Olivia, Shadie, Shannon, Sophia and Steph for all of their hard work.

Jay’s LFW Trio of Tresses

So another fantastic London Fashion Week is over and one of our fabulous stylists, Jay was right in the centre of the action, working on the hair for three of LFW’s superstars: Ann-Sofie Back, Saloni and Temperley.

Jay has kindly offered to talk us through these ‘dos and re-create the same style on one our beautiful colourists, Sophia…

ANN-SOFIE BACK

“The most important thing about this do is creating oodles of texture. The clothes in the collection are very smart so we wanted to contrast the hair by not creating a definite, sharp parting; by not choosing a specific side for the parting so it wasn’t a uniform look; and putting so much product in the hair that it looked at felt matt and fairly fluffy, to the extent that the product was actually dried into the hair so make it very heavy and messy.

“After creating the right texture we had to create the style: the pony-tail was tied very loosely; we then tied a paper bandana tightly around the eyes and sprayed heavily with hairspray to create a crease just above the ears. The texture was so important that it even translated to the fringe which hung in front of one eye, heavy with product and very dishevelled.”

“The idea for this show was to create something effortless, young and fresh. It had a soft texture, a romantic feel and wasn’t as messy as Ann-Sofie’s ‘dos. We started with a side parting on the left-hand side, keeping the top very flat and smoothing down any unruly bits. We tried to make it quite asymmetric, with one side covering the ear and the other being tucked behind.

“To create the look we tied the hair in a low ponytail and then twisted it into a slightly dishevelled chignon, being quite liberal with the pins and happy for them to be on display. We then fluffed up the top part, smoothing the palm across the top from the tip to the root to create a static look. To finish the look with pinned five pins at the front.”

TEMPERLEY

“Temperley’s look was über-sleek and super-polished. We started with wax on the roots to help to create clean sections and then divided the hair into a lower half and an upper half.

"Firstly we took the lower section and scraped it right back to create a very tight ponytail. We then did the same with the upper section, dragging the two together and creating a face-lift effect! The hairband was wrapped in a ribbon of hair and we finished with lots of wax and hairspray so that not one single hair was out of place.”

Warm Up as it Cools Down

As we enter into the Autumn months our colour team alter their recommendations accordingly. As the weather gets cooler we suggest that our clients choose much warmer palettes. The cool hues which dominate the colour scene during the winter become deeper and more intense. Simultaneously, our clients’ celebrity pin-ups evolve… we move from a Charlize Champagne to a Golden Reese; from Olivia Palermo’s sun-kissed streaks to Princess Kate’s rich tones.

In the Daniel Galvin colour department we can cater for every seasonal whim; whether dramatic or subtle. For a subtle look people often opt for our vegetable dyes. These are semi-permanent, they wash out completely and they disguise, rather than cover the grey 100% giving a natural, free-moving look. As vegetable colours deposit the colour rather than lift, you can go darker but not lighter, which is why they are sometimes more popular during the cooler months.

I’m Frankie, Style Director at Daniel Galvin in Central London and I spend many of my Saturdays in the salon creating beautiful hairdos for my bridal clients.

Weddings are so stressful, the last thing you want is for your hair to be an added source of anxiety. The most important thing, in my opinion is to get your hair in good condition prior to your Big Day and have a really good idea of what you want your hair to look like: it’s a good plan to have a few practices with your hairdresser beforehand.

So please feel free ask me anything hair-related - whether you have issues with your condition, you don’t know which style will go with your dress or you want to find the best ‘do to go under your veil, I will be happy to help out in any way that I can.

Frizzy, Damaged Curly Hair

I am trying to grow my hair for my wedding next August and I wonder if there are any products that you can recommend that will help speed this up and strengthen my hair. Naturally my hair is very curly but for the past 7 years have straightened it daily with hair straightners and have also used a chemical straightnign products on it.

As a result it is super frizzy, weak, split and damaged. I am now trying to wear my hair up more so as not to straighten it, however it seems that just as it is growing a bit, the ends split and I have to get it all chopped off to stop it looking so terrible.

Please help me have beautiful wedding day hair.

Hi Lucy,

Straightening is notoriously bad for the hair – it weakens & damages it & it’s a vicious cycle as the hair becomes more & more fizzy and unmanageable, as you have discovered.

There are lots of fantastic products out there which will help to remedy this issue. I would recommend coming into the salon & having our Keratin treatment. It’s strengthening, it restructures your hair, will tame the frizz & leave your locks looking glossy & sleek.

As for products to use on a daily basis, I would recommend using Bain de Force by Kerastase to shampoo your hair & their Ciment Anti-Usure as your conditioner. Also I would recommend doing a weekly masque. I also have a great belief in ‘Phyto’ Hair & Nail vitamin formula. I have seen great results in my clients over the past few years.

Make sure you have small, regular cuts every 8 weeks and by next August you should have beautiful, long, glossy hair leaving you free to enjoy your day!

Hi Boopy,

With regards to dull hair there are some great glossing products on the market. I’d really recommend the vegetable dyes that we do here at Daniel Galvin, that give you a more luscious shine & depth.

I love the idea of the hairdo you are going for; maybe have your hair blow-dried the day before to let it settle down & to avoid fluffy hair. A good blow dry is VERY important to help prevent frizzing.

For a natural hold, Bumble and Bumble Prep spray is perfect, as well as helping to weather-proof the hair by locking down the cuticles. Then, to give your hair a sleek appearance & to banish the frizziness, use some hair taming products for the day, such as Kerastase Elixir Ultime or Lumiere Nutri-Sculpt for iridescent shine.

To Permanent Blow Dry or Not?

I want to wear it down and naturally curly for my wedding but want to try and stop the frizz attacks! I've heard a lot about permanent blowdrys and my friend (who has straight ish hair) had it done and it looks fab. Could it help get rid of the frizz from my hair or will it just iron out the curls? I'm confused! I don't want to spend the money if it's going to flatten my hair.

Hi Missy Moo,

How lovely to have naturally curly hair! There are lots of different permanent / Brazilian blow-dries on the market. I’ve tried quite a few & the one that we use at Daniel Galvin I absolutely love. NanoKeratin Gold is light-weight, de-frizzing, conditioning and long-lasting – it is also available throughout the country. With all permanent blow-dries you will notice a certain flatness to the hair as there is no longer frizz to add volume. In my opinion this gives you a natural look but you may lose some of your curls. I have seen some Brazilian treatments that make the hair VERY straight so do do some research before going for it.

It might be an idea to have the treatment a month or so before so that the product can slightly wear off & if you have time, perhaps trial it before you go for it for your Big Day. The great thing about using this product is that you give your hair a complete rest as you’re not fighting frizz with heat-styling tools the whole time.

A lot of people think that this product will give you a salon blow-dry, i.e. adding a wave, giving you more body. BUT it is designed as a de-frizzer and WILL NOT give you a salon finish. It WILL, however, make your life a LOT easier when it comes to styling on a daily basis.

I admire Diane Kruger’s chic updos, Blake Lively’s fun summer beachy look and Penelope Cruz’s soft styles. It might be an idea to Google their names & look through their hair histories. They all have gorgeous, long hair that is often fashionably positioned on top of their heads.

I actually wrote a blog the other day about wedding hair and suggested three updos – the soft Side Chignon is my favourite and sounds as if it would be perfect for you as it’s soft around the face, it can be decorated with whichever hair jewellery you require, and you can see it from the front, as well as just the side and the back which means it would be seen in your photos. I also have problems when i have my hair longer than my usual bob it becomes greasy and knotty.

Hi KDN

Think Dita Von Teese and Diane Kruger – Sexy, sophisticated glamour. I love the idea of 1940s hair & I’m sure if you already have the idea in your head, the dress will go with it.

Think teased out waves; it may be a little difficult to incorporate a tiara as it was more about glitzy hair pins on the side, rather than a full decorative piece on the crown however, you could alter the ‘do according to your requirements.

Make sure you use strong holding spray such as L’Oreal Professional Air Fix Hairspray to keep your coiffured ‘do in place. This style is all about structure, with finger waves and low side partings. Heated rollers can achieve this look if put in directionally and evenly spaced throughout the hair.

With regards to greasy / knotty hair, it sounds like you have fine hair & lots of it… The most important thing is to choose your haircare products wisely. I would highly recommend Louise Galvin’s Sacred Locks range for Fine Hair – it has no silicon & it’s very natural & organic which stops the hair being weighed down and brings the shine out. It simply brings your hair back to basic, cleansing the hair of its impurities. Hi Lella

The key to this is using the right styling tools & product combination and to prep with months of strengthening. Without seeing your hair it’s hard to advise, but I would recommend choosing your products carefully. Check out the L’Oreal Professionel styling range using products such as Pli, Volume Architect and Volume Lift, and finish with a light-weight but strong hairspray, such as Infinium Lumiere.

Be sure that none of the products that you choose are wet and sticky or too strong because, as the day goes on & they break down, they will make your hair fall down again. If you live in London, come down to the salon to be advised on the best path forward.

Fringe Festival

Are there any appropriate styles you'd recommend for in-between fringe (the rest of my hair is quite long), or should I just deal with it and keep the fringe trimmed for now? Thank you!!!!

Hi Hula,

I’m noticing that more & more wedding hairdos don’t have fringes so I think it’s a great idea to go against the grain & have a fringe.

Maybe think about softening the way it’s cut to give you a more bridal look. Could you add your fringe into the hairdo you’ve already chosen? Many updos are really brought to life with a heavy but textured fringe and can make them look less severe. Alternatively, ask your hairdresser to cut the fringe in a more angular style so that it’s a sweeping, side fringe.

If you are in the in-between stages of fringe-growing I would get a matte Kirby grip (in the colour of your hair) and you can discreetly tuck it away behind your ear and create the updo of your desire!

If you’re in London, pop down to the salon for Fringe Fridays when, on Fridays, anyone can have their fringes trimmed for free!

Hi Twinkle

What a lovely theme!

I think for the regency period you should be looking at soft sweeping partings. Use tongs to tong your hair in the same direction and use a classic Denman hairbrush to brush these into beautiful finger waves. Don’t use too many products to keep it soft and romantic otherwise it’ll become too harsh.
Keep a few pieces down around the hairline and think about a low knot around the nape of the neck. If you have a look at Rosamund Pike’s (Jane) hair in the latest adaptation (that features Keira Knightley), it’ll give you the idea – very romantic, elegant and quintessentially English rose.

Alternatively check our Chanel’s early work which has a similar feel.

An easy-to-create 'do; the Updated Chignon is simple and sophisticated and perfect for an evening event. Jay, who has worked with many of the Fashion Week teams and styles many a celebrity, says that chic, sleek looks are set to be big this Autumn / Winter.

Here's Jay's 'HOW TO':
- prep the hair with a volumising spray
- dry it thoroughly
- use a 'Marcel tong' to tong the hair one way, and then back again so that it flicks back on itself. Do every section exactly the same
- Once the whole head is tonged, brush out the hair & pull it into a high, tight ponytail right on top of the head
- brush out the ponytail and tie it in into a knot as you would a piece of string. Pin it ET VOILA!

With this is mind Frankie Pullen, senior stylist at Daniel Galvin, has pulled together 3 Top Tips to bear in mind if you’re considering a fringe:

- If you have a square jaw, avoid fringes that go straight across – you need a slightly rounded cut with longer parts at the sides to properly frame the face.

- Ignore the myth that people with small foreheads shouldn’t have fringes. Everyone (with the exception of those with very pronounces cowlicks) suits a fringe: the smaller the forehead, the higher up the head you should start. This lengthens the face as it gives the illusion of it extending into the hairline.

- Make sure that your lifestyle suits having a fringe. If you have an outside job they’re probably not the best choice as our lovely British weather will just plaster it to your forehead or make it curl or frizz and you’ll end up pinning it up.

MERRY CHRISTMAS IN JULY!!

The world of journalism is a funny one. The art of creating a glossy, monthly magazine is now such a refined one that the editorial teams are forced to begin to create them at least four months in advance. This means that the journos that put together magazines such as Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle or Cosmo live in a strange little season-defying bubble in which they are focussing on bikini diets in February and New Year's Resolutions in August. These forward-thinking deadlines have also led to a recently created PR drive entitled 'Christmas in July': a bizarre sentence to most human beings, but for PRs and Journalists it roles off the tongue as easily as 'New Year New You.'

Every brand wants to be in the December issues (as Christmas is the most lucrative time of year) so we all prepare our Christmas stories during the Summer so as to provide fodder for our journalist friends. Anyway, it being July, we at Daniel Galvin got to thinking about how we all should be doing our hair in the upcoming Christmas season and we thought you might also be interested.

THE BEEHIVE IS BACK!

As exhibited on the Karl Lagerfeld and Jean Paul Gautier AW11 catwalks, the Beehive is BACK.

Frankie Pullen, stylist at Daniel Galvin comments: “This is my favourite style for this coming Winter. I’m afraid for most people it might be slightly too complicated a look to create yourself but if you’re going to a big Christmas do and you want to impress, this is definitely a must.

“This year’s beehives have been slightly updated giving a more lived-in, textured appearance. Texture sprays, such as the L’Oreal Beach Fizz from the Play Ball collection, are brilliant for creating this look.”

KEEPING YOUR COLOUR WARM WHEN IT'S CHILLY OUTSIDE

Hair colours this Winter are of a very warm palette. If you’re darker then copper and auburn will enrich your look, whilst blondes should also go for warmer tones, such as caramel and honey.

This trend mirrors the leaning in fashion towards earthy, woody, natural shades.

Daniel Galvin, Hair Colour Guru comments: “The trends in hair colour tend to follow a similar pattern year by year: in the summer, colour becomes lighter and cooler, whilst in the winter it becomes warmer and richer. The difference is the intensity of the colour. This year people are celebrating a much more natural look which is fantastic for us as ‘Natural Beauty Enhancement’ is my salon’s philosophy!”

At Daniel Galvin we have a range of vegetable dyes which are semi-permanent and deepen your colour rather than lighten it. They are also free from peroxide and ammonia.

GET THAT TEXTUAL FEELING

Trends on the Autumn / Winter catwalk demanded the juxtaposition of numerous materials including fake fur, leather and tweed, and the hairstyles mirrored this style.

Give your hair something a bit different by creating a textured appearance; fusing two different looks together. Slick vs ruffled; neat vs messy…all in the one look.

Frankie offers some tips on how to create a textured look for yourself:
STEP 1: Separate your hair into three parts: the front two inches of your hair (a), the hair from there to the back of your crown (b) and then tie the lower part in a low pony tail (c).

STEP 2: Backcomb part b (the crown) and pin it at the top of the ponytail

STEP 3: Bring the front part of the hair around to the back and wrap it around the pony tail. Set with a strong hair spray, such as L’Oréal Air Fix and finish with a texture spray, such as the Play Ball Beach Fizz, scrunching up your pony tail to create the desired messy effect. To add extra waves use the Babyliss Professional Curling Tongs.

SLEEK SIDE-PARTINGS AND NEAT PONYTAILS

It’s an oldie but a goody: the ponytail has been through many modifications in its time but, as an easy-to-create up-do, it has always stuck around; giving a neat impression whilst also giving you a natural face-lift!

For a chic, smart Christmas do, mix a pony with a slicked down side parting and a hair wrapped hairband. Using the correct product is vital when emulating this look.

Frankie says: “Scrape back your hair, leaving a small portion out of the ponytail. Conceal your hairband by wrapping around this extra piece of hair. To get the slicked-back, glossy look use a gel, for example L’Oréal Fix Move and then finish by covering with a shine spray, such as the L’Oréal Crystal Gloss.”

CHRISTMAS HAIR DECORATIONS

Christmas can be exhausting, with several parties to go to in a week, and thus several different looks to create. A good way of standing out is with hair accessories, which were very big on the catwalk for AW11.

Feathers featured quite frequently as well as flowers and jaunty hats. Frankie suggests: “If you have a vintage brooch or a necklace that you’re particularly fond of, bring it into the salon and we can fix it with pins.

“Accessorising is the perfect way to brighten up a less interesting hairstyle, and a good way to finish off or complement an outfit.”

WAVE GOODBYE TO 2011

Create a sweeping romantic look for an intimate Christmas do with some bouncy bodied tumbling waves.

Frankie loves creating this ‘do: “This awesome 60s, Farah Fawcett look is über feminine and really softens the features.

“I’d create this look by first of all taking large sections of the hair and curling it using tongs. After removing the tongs I would wrap the section back on itself and pin it into place to set. After about 10 minutes I would back comb the curls using my fingers so that the top, straighter part is smooth but the wave has a bit more messy body.”

Katy & Cheryl – WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!

We have been aghast at some of the hair colour mishaps that have been occurring this week. Unfortunately, two of our favourite celebrities seem to be straying from their natural palettes: Cheryl Cole and Katy Perry, two of our treasured pop icons, have this week both chosen to move from brunette to blonde.

Daniel is horrified at the mistakes that some hair stylists make: “In my opinion hair colouring should be based upon enhancing a client’s natural beauty, not about simply flinging hair colour at a head and seeing what sticks!!!

“Cheryl’s new colour simply drains her skintone and does nothing to bring out all of that natural pizzazz. Remember ladies: fashion comes and fashion goes, but style goes on forever! A lady’s hair is her ultimate beauty asset and she should use it as such. Choose a colour to complement your features and boost your complexion.

“Katy Perry’s hair hasn’t been right for some time now. She’s gone from very dark, which was just too dark, to a reddy blonde which, again, doesn’t work! When you have the perfect hair colour the first thing other people should notice is your eyes. With both of these girls, the first thing you notice is their hair colour, which is just not right!

“I understand that when you’re a trend-setting popstar, often you want to go for a ‘do that is slightly more outgoing, but it’s important to do it with taste! It’s all about movement. Look at Kate Middleton’s hair for example – it flows naturally and looks sun-kissed. If you go for a block colour like Cheryl or Katy, you’ll been maintaining it weekly as your roots will be almost immediately visible.

“Both of these ladies could do with taking some tips from Penelope Cruz whose hair we coloured when she was filming Sahara. Her beautiful dark hair still gives her that exotic look but the subtle highlights soften her features.

“To all of those girls out there who are dark and want to go light – think long and hard about your decision! Don’t go for anything more than three levels lighter than your natural colour; go for flushes or even dip-dye to keep the hair looking three dimensional and alive. Go for a colour that gives the appearance of having been kissed by the sun; not hit by the peroxide bottle!”

A Very Apt App!

The very clever people at Glamour Magazine are now creating a host of fantastic beauty apps for the iPhone. The one that caught our eye was the very brilliant ‘Take Me To The Hairdresser,’ which at only 59p really is value for money.

The app acts as a sort of flip-book of celebrity ‘dos. Split into 3 sections: Colour, Cut and Style, you can scroll through pictures of all of your favourite celebs and take inspiration from them when you’re at the hairdressers. Gone are the days of magazine cut-outs and vague descriptions!

At Daniel Galvin, we are quite taken by the gizmo. Daniel comments: “To have this kind of technology at your fingertips is a great help to both clients and hairdressers as clients try to make themselves understood and hairdressers try to bring their visions to life.

“In terms of hair colouring, the shade is such a specific thing – it’s so difficult to pinpoint exactly what you want in words. People often use celebrities as their reference points saying things like ‘not as champagne as Charlize Therone, but then Reese Witherspoon is too yellow.’ To have the visuals on hand and categorised so simply and practically is a much more precise representation of our clients’ desires.”

You Can Leave Your Sunhat On!

With the Summer holidays fast approaching one of the key features of any girl’s suitcase is her vanity case. Packed with all the necessaries... Nivea, Immac, Paracetamol, Autan… most of us take up about half of our luggage allowance with our health and beauty essentials! It has been drummed into us that the most important thing is to stock up on suntan oil in order to protect our skin from the rays, but many of us fail to realise that our hair is just as worthy of our protection.

Luckily, Daniel Galvin is here to give us some tips on how to keep our hair looking fresh and healthy this summer: “Elements such as sunshine, salt water and chlorine each take their toll on the hair, leaving it knotty, brittle and lifeless. My key tip for the season would be to keep the head continuously covered; whether this be by a summer hat or by a hair masque or milk. When you have been in the swimming pool or sea, make sure that you rinse out the water after you get out. You should then apply some sort of hair protection masque or milk.

“For me there are three top-quality products to choose from when packing your vanity case this summer:

1. The Kérastase Aqua Seal is a highly protective fluid cream. It is waterproof (which means that it doesn’t need to be applied quite as often – but don’t think that means that it’s unnecessary to re-apply!) and is a leave-in treatment. It protects you from the sun as well as being ultra-hydrating.

2. My colour team’s brand of the year has definitely been Moroccan Oil. Their fabulous products leave the hair feeling smooth and silky and their Intense Hydrating Masque is no exception. As its name suggests it hydrates from root to rip and restores strength and vitality in dry, damaged hair.

3. Back to Kérastase, and their Soleil Lait is another fabulous product. It contains UVA and UVB protection and nourishes each strand of hair, and should be applied after a day in the sun.”

'Galvin'ising Models on the Westminster Graduate Catwalk

On the 26th May Style Director Brendon Fowles headed up a team of seven Daniel Galvin hairdressers working their magic on the models at the Westminster Graduate Show.

The twenty Westminster graduates exhibited their incredible flare with fashion-forward pieces which included geometric prints, pleats and deconstructed chiffon. These designs were complimented perfectly by Brendon and his team’s chic hairstyles which focussed predominantly on sleek side partings and bouncing Italian waves.

As this is our first blogpost, we thought that we’d give you a bit of an insight into what makes a globally recognised talent like Daniel Galvin tick, and what makes his salon unique.

At Daniel Galvin we are thrilled to be acknowledged as one of the leading salons in the industry. Daniel has recently marked his fiftieth year working in hairdressing. During his time, he has revolutionised the way that hairdressers colour people’s hair. His philosophy, which is to ‘enhance natural beauty,’ drives him to pay close attention to the colour of his clients’ skin and eyes and the natural movement of their hair.

Daniel has been in business for over 30 years but his flagship Marylebone salon was opened in 2003 and was Europe’s first Super Salon, spanning 9,000 square feet. In 2006 he was made an OBE for his contribution to hair colour and the hairdressing industry and was the first person in this field to achieve this great honour.
